Washington D.C. is located 370 km south of New York and is the capital and seat of the US government. Few cities in the U.S. were built according to plan, but Washington DC was especially designed by a French engineer. Today, Washington, D. C. (which by the way stands for “District of Columbia”) is considered a city full of variety and delights not only for tourists but also for its residents. Spacious parks and buildings represent the powerful cosmopolitan city that is home to many diplomats, politicians and embassies. The most famous building is probably the White House which is the home of the First Family – since 2009 it is occupied by 44th President Barack Obama and his family.
There are many attractions waiting for tourists in Washington, DC. Georgia is a famous neighbourhood and home to a lot of politicians. Towards the harbour lie beautiful houses and villas and right by the waterfront are great places to eat. Adams-Morgan is considered the liveliest district of Washington which has an interesting nightlife. Capitol Hill is the number one address for architecture fans as is has stunning buildings and mansions. At the corner of Seventh Street and North Carolina Avenue is the Sunday Flea Market which is very popular among locals. Dupont Circle attracts with its beautiful parks and is an ideal place for families, inline skaters and walkers. The Government District is built entirely of sandstone and marble and can be explored on foot. Here, tourists can visit the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Museum.
Washington has 3 airports and Australians usually land at Washington Dulles. Several American airlines collaborate with Qantas and flights from Australia usually stop in Los Angeles on the way. The average flight duration from major Australian cities is 23 hours which can be longer the more stops are involved.
