Vilnius Flight Guide
Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and is the largest city of the country with 554,000 inhabitants. It owes its name to River Vilnia and is located near the border to Belarus. Vilnius is the Catholic Archbishop seat and is one of the oldest university towns of Europe thanks to Vilnius University which was established in 1579. Unlike the other Baltic capitals Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia), Vilnius was not taken over by Germans in the Middle Ages and has therefore no traces of German medieval architecture in the Old Town.
The classical Cathedral at the Archbishop's cathedral square is one of the major attractions in the historic Old Town of Vilnius. On the opposite side is the well preserved Cathedral Bell Tower. There are also three beautiful castles in Vilnius which are all worth seeing. During a sightseeing tour through Vilnius, tourists will walk past numerous majestic churches that will enchant every architecture lover and religious follower. Vilnius was named European Capital of Culture in 2009.
There are a number of Australian and European airlines that offer flights from Australia to Vilnius. Since Lithuania is a fairly small country, this trip will involve several stops even when flying from major Australian airports. Expect to travel 24- 30 hours on average, but compare fares and connecting flights to avoid unnecessary 40-hour long trips with prices up to $4000 for a return ticket.
