Tokyo Flight Guide
Including all its suburbs, Tokyo has the world’s largest metropolitan area with a total population of about 34 million people. The region is the financial, industrial, commercial and cultural centre of Japan. Travellers are confronted with a fast-paced, hectic Japanese crowd with a daily routine that reminds of scenes from many Japanese Manga and Anime movies. Luckily there are plenty of parks to escape the overwhelming hustle and bustle that is Tokyo.
Tokyo is enormous in size and sights so that careful planning is strongly recommended before exploring the metropolitan area. There are 23 administrative districts and each of them could be considered as independent city with its own centre and character. The best way to begin a tour in Tokyo is Shinjuku with its shiny modern skyscrapers, neon signs and trendy restaurants. To get the best views for free, take a trip to the city hall which used to be the tallest building in Japan. Young people meet near Harajuku on weekends and dress up as their favourite Japanese cartoon characters- a very peculiar show. Omote-Sando is an ideal place for a shopping spree, especially for electronic fans. Not far away is the trendy area Ueno with many bars and restaurants.
The summers in Tokyo are hot and humid with temperatures above 30°C. Avoid travelling in summer and also September/October as these are the most likely months for a hurricane. The best time is winter due to its dry and sunny climate (expect cold winds!). Japan Airlines International takes you directly from Australia to Tokyo within 10 hours. Qantas also offers flights usually from Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Cairns.
