Tallinn Flight Guide
Tallin is the capital of Estonia and one of the three main cities in the Baltic. Its history goes back many centuries and it used to be an important maritime trading centre. Tallinn literally means "Danish city" or "Danish castle" and got this name when it was conquered by Danish King Waldemar in the 13th Century. The convenient location by the Gulf of Finland makes Tallinn attractive to many people and it now has 400,000 inhabitants. The Estonian capital is only 70km away from Helsinki and many Finns spend their summer holidays here.
Tallinn has many sights such as the Old Town which is a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997. The city overall is a fusion of medieval architecture, Tsarist Russia and Soviet heritage. Most houses in the historic Old Town of Tallinn have a history that goes back to the 11th century and even Europe’s oldest pharmacy can be found here. Tallinn is also surrounded by a unique well-preserved city wall with numerous watch towers. Another important sight is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral which is a symbol of the Tsarist Empire and the Russian dominance of the Baltic. Beautiful religious buildings can be found all over town and a particular eye-catcher is the Maiden Tower which used to be a prison for prostitutes.
Overnight accommodation in Tallinn is not a problem at all. There are several hostels in the Old Town as well as a number of luxurious hotels. One attraction it the old telegraph station which was recently converted into a design hotel called Telegraaf. Flying to Tallinn takes around 23 hours on a quick route from Sydney. A good alternative for those departing from small Australian airports is to spend a little time in Helsinki first and travel to Tallinn from there- even as part of a day trip. Helsinki’s airport is significantly larger and flight connections may be better.
