Sofia Flight Guide
Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and the district of Oblast. The city is now home to more than 1.4 million inhabitants and is the centre of Bulgaria’s politics, economy and culture. In addition, Sofia has the country’s most important transportation hub and is home to some of the oldest universities, museums and theatres. The city is beautifully surrounded by the Vitosha Mountains and Balkan Mountains which represent the border to neighbouring country Serbia.
Unfortunately, the old town of Sofia is not very well preserved as it was heavily bombed during World War II. Nevertheless it is worth seeing and is surrounded by lots of beautiful new buildings. The Maria Luisa Boulevard is the city centre and many important churches, expensive shops and government buildings are located here. There are countless restaurants, bars and small shops that offer a variety of Bulgarian specialties such as "Kebaptscheta", "Shopska salad" and "Tarator”. The city centre is also the primary location for Sofia’s nightlife featuring many bars and clubs. The district of Studenski Grad (Student City) is home to around 50,000 students and there are several cheap restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs.
Sofia has an international airport as well as a very complex rail and bus infrastructure. Busses are running international routes between Sofia and destinations in Eastern Europe, Turkey, Austria and Germany. Despite all these options, Australian passengers have to travel long hours to Sofia- With at least 2 stops, the flight can take up to 30 hours even from the largest Australian airports. Passengers usually stop in Athens and/or Dubai on the way which is reason for the long flight.
