Santa Fe (New Mexico) lies 100 km north of Albuquerque and is a popular tourist destination in the United States. As the second oldest city in the US, it offers a unique blend of history, architecture, culture, cuisine, shopping and nature in an environment that embodies the American Southwest. With 65,000 inhabitants, Santa Fe is the third largest city in New Mexico. It was originally founded by Spaniards in 1607 and is the oldest capital city of the United States. The original name was "La Villa Real de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis" and is Spanish for "the Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi."

It is located 2,333 meters above sea level in a valley near the Rio Grande at the southern foot of the Rocky Mountains. Visitors are often surprised by the weather as they expect a desert-like climate. However, winters bring enough snow to make it a popular ski resort; hence Santa Fe promises a great vacation all year round. The annual Indian Market is held in August where travellers have the opportunity to buy original art object from Native Americans who come from all over the country to participate. The traditional Spanish market takes place in July and is the oldest and largest exhibition of such native goods in the United States. A smaller winter Spanish Market takes place in December.

There are a number of hotels in the beautiful historic downtown area which are built in Adobe Spanish Colonial style. They are usually luxury hotels with high prices and there is a much bigger choice of hotels at the Cerrillos Road a few miles south. Travellers on a budget will find more reasonable prices down here. There are no airline services between Santa Fe and Australia as Santa Fe’s airport is new and small. Visitors are advised to book their flight to Los Angeles (from November 2009) or Dallas and continue their journey on an inland flight with American Eagle. Alternatively, Santa Fe is accessible via coach and bus, and visitors should check well in advance which operators are currently running trips to and from Santa Fe.
