San Francisco Flight Guide
San Francisco is located in the U.S. state of California along the Pacific coast. With almost 750,000 inhabitants it is the fourth largest city in California and was built on hills. San Francisco is often called ‘Frisco’ by locals because of its many earthquakes. The worst earthquake was in 1906, and the last one hit the city in 1989. San Francisco is known for its famous bridges and the joyful lifestyle among the locals.
Sightseeing in San Francisco is exciting for everyone – beautiful architecture and Victorian houses turn the city into a very special place. Worth seeing are the numerous impressive churches which attracted even Pope John Paul II. The most famous attraction and the town's landmark is the glorious Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge can be explored on foot and is a great place to take photographs of the city. The famous cable cars which dominate the city of San Francisco have their own museum - The Cable Car Museum is the place to go for those who would like to learn about the railway history. Perhaps the most futuristic building is the Transamerica Pyramid from where tourists have great views of the city. The City Hall is also a very imposing building and is similar to the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Also worth a visit for architecture fans is Lombard Street with its beautiful residential homes. An absolute highlight of San Francisco is of course Alcatraz which is the former prison island in San Francisco Bay. A short ferry ride takes visitors from the mainland onto the island of Alcatraz, which is also simply called ‘The Rock’. San Francisco offers hotels and accommodations for all budgets. The best low-cost option is one of the three youth hostels in San Francisco as well as the Travel Lodge San Francisco Airport North. The most famous hotel in the city is the Fairmont Hotel as well as Hotel Triton with its differently themed rooms. Also very popular among tourists is the Bed & Breakfast House Golden Gate. There are non-stop direct flights between San Francisco and Sydney. Qantas and a number of US airlines service this route and take passengers from Sydney to San Francisco in 14 hours. Passengers from other Australian cities must travel via Sydney and add another 5- 8 hours to their flight duration.
