Phnom Penh Flight Guide
Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and has 2 million inhabitants. It has a very long history including colonialism, wars and kingdoms- thus, it offers a wide variety of architectural landmarks. They range from the ancient Khmer temples such as Wat Phnom to the Royal Palace built in the 19th Century which can be found next to the French colonial villas in the central district Phsar Thmei.
After Cambodia liberated itself from France and gained independence, the city experienced an exceptional construction boom under the rule of King Norodom Sihanouk. This golden era of modern architecture is also called New Khmer Architecture. Tourists must visit some of the most unique buildings such as the National Theatre, the house of the Minister, the Department of Foreign Languages, the National Sports Centre, the Royal University and the aristocratic Villas. Some of the buildings have been heavily damaged during the Civil War and are torn down to make space for new buildings. This caused an activist movement to preserve the old remains – however many buildings (especially villas) have already been converted into luxury hotels, such as the Knai Bang Chatt and Frangipani.
Technically, travellers from Australia can reach Phnom Penh within 12- 15 hours on a 1-stop flight. However, these flights can be difficult to find and passengers end up on 24-hour flights that stop all over Asia on the way. It is therefore recommended to browse the internet and find the fastest (which are also the cheapest!) flights from any Australian airport to Phnom Penh.
