Ottawa Flight Guide
Ottawa is the federal capital of Canada and is located in the eastern part of province Ontario along the Ottawa River. Ottawa means "merchant" in the language of the Algonquin who were the first settlers at the River. On the other side of the river is the twin city of Gatineau and together they have approx. 1.1 million inhabitants. Both English and French are spoken in Ottawa; however the majority of French speakers are in Gatineau.
Unlike Toronto and Montreal, Ottawa has only a few high-rise buildings. The main attraction is the government quarter with buildings designed in British Gothic Revival style according to the London model. The buildings of most interest are located on Parliament Hill between the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa River. The oldest church in Ottawa is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Ottawa and is also the seat of the archbishop. West of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame d'Ottawa is the National Gallery which is definitely worth a visit.
The Château Laurier is a hotel inside a medieval castle which was built in 1912 and is one of the best hotels in the city. Passengers from Australia can generally reach Ottawa from most Australian airports, however the best connections are offered from the largest cities such as Sydney. Air Canada offers a 1-stop flight between Sydney and Ottawa that takes passengers to their destination within 23 hours. Travellers from other Australian airports will experience longer flights as they usually stop in Sydney on the way which can take up to 30 hours.
