Oslo Flight Guide
Oslo is the capital of Norway and one of the smallest capitals in Europe with only 1.4 million people in the metropolitan area. It was established in 1050 by King Harald Hardråde and was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1926. This is due to the fact that Oslo was primarily built out of wood and was rebuilt after the fire using rocks. The city is surrounded by beautiful hills and fjords which gives it a natural and fresh flair. Oslo is not known for great architecture but more for its rich history, which is represented by medieval buildings such as Akerhus Slotts, Radhus, Slott and the Storting. Despite the small size of the city, Oslo is now a major financial, military and administrative centre and plays a dominant role in today's economy.
Oslo has a very compact medieval city centre and the best way to explore it is on foot. All districts and attractions are within walking distance and a great stay is guaranteed while strolling through small alleys and exploring hidden corners. The harbour area Aker Brygge was recently redesigned and contains numerous shops, bars and restaurants with beautiful views of the harbour. The Frogner district is west of Oslo and tourists come here to browse through small boutiques and take a break in one of the lovely cafes. The Botanic Gardens and Toyenbated Park are located in the East, and are the perfect place for a relaxed afternoon, a picnic or just to rest. Maritime museums are large in number and can be found in Bygdoy which you can reach with a ferry from the Town Hall. Tourists who enjoy hiking and walking can move towards the outskirts of the city and enjoy the stunning nature and wildlife of Scandinavia. The mountain Holemnkollen is also a good place to visit when the city gets too crowded, and visitors will be able to see the world’s oldest ski jump. The area around Grünerløkka is known for its exciting nightlife and young atmosphere and has a variety of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Scandinavian winters are cold but beautiful- those who don’t mind a little snow should travel to Oslo between October and February. The perfect time to see Oslo with a little bit of sunshine is between June and September, although it may get crowded during these months. Travellers from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane can catch a flight to Oslo with Qantas, British Airways and Air France. Average travel time varies between 24- 26 hours but can be longer depending on connecting flights and stops.
