New York Flight Guide
With over 8 million inhabitants and a fast-paced lifestyle, New York is the city that never sleeps. Established in 1613 as ‘New Amsterdam’, it is situated on the east coast of the US and is surrounded by the Hudson and East River. The ‘Big Apple’ is divided into 5 districts and is often referred to as New York City to distinguish it from the same named state of New York. It is the economic and cultural centre of the east coast and has a long history. It is recommended to allow several days for a visit to New York to see the most interesting parts in Manhattan but also to take a trip to other districts.
New York is a city of skyscrapers, most famously the Empire State Building, the Trump Tower and the Chrysler Building. Rockefeller Center is also worth a visit and of course the momentous Ground Zero which is a reminder of the former World Trade Center and the attacks of 9/11. The most famous and widely visible landmark is the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island. Recommended is also a trip to Ellis Island which was the first stop for all immigrants who were hoping to start a new life in America. It is also referred to as the “Island of Tears” because many immigrants were sent back to their home if they weren’t accepted. One of the most impressive and beautiful bridges in the city of New York is without a doubt the Brooklyn Bridge.
Although New York City never sleeps, visitors will be able to find accommodation. However, a standard hotel room can cost US$ 100 per night and prices can rise for those wishing for more comfort. But it is still possible to find cheap accommodation in New York, for example youth hostels or even hotels with shared bathrooms such as the West Side Inn, the Inn America or Hotel 31. The usual luxury hotel chains are certainly also represented in New York. Although New York has a number of airports, international visitors are most likely to land at J.F.K airport. There are countless airlines that offer flights from all major Australian airports, usually with a stop in Los Angeles. The journey will take around 22-24 hours.
