Milan Flight Guide
Milan, or ‘Milano’ as they say in Italy, is located in the northern part of the country and is the second largest Italian city with its 1.3 million people. Milan is surrounded by the Po Valley and is the provincial capital of Lombardy. Locals have a very distinct Milanese accent which may be difficult to understand, but gives the lively people a unique character. Milan is also famous for a handful of regional dishes that are worth a visit to one of the countless restaurants and ‘tavernas’.
The Milan Cathedral is the most striking building and dominates the entire city of Milan. La Scala is a world renowned opera house in Milan. The theatre is recognised as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world. The noble Sforza family built a castle in the 13th century which is another mind-blowing example of fine architecture. Milan is considered to be the largest shopping metropolis in Europe and visitors will find all designers in Via Montenapoleone. The most beautiful shopping temple is the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II and is worth a visit simply to catch a glimpse of this astonishing architectural masterpiece. Those who want to grab a bargain should avoid designer shops and rather take a stroll around the countless street markets of Milan. Italians love to celebrate, which makes nightlife in Milan a special adventure. The converted factory buildings near Via Savona Porto Genova are a fashionable place to spend the night and go clubbing. Jazz lovers should go to Via Ascanio Sforza to watch live performances.
There are many places to sleep in Milan, and the best offers are usually found online. Lower priced hotels include Hotel Delle Nazioni, the Concorde, the Garda and the Loreto. Those who need a little more luxury should book with the Ascot Hotel which has a central location and magnificent views of the city. Because of the many cars, Milan (and Athens) are the European cities with the highest air pollution, which means an extremely hot summer. If possible tourists should plan their trip in winter where the temperatures are relatively mild. Milan has several airports and visitors from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will have the best flight connections with British Airways or Qantas. Depending on waiting periods and stops, the trip will be no less than 22 hours.
