London Flight Guide
On a trip to Europe, a visit to London is a must. Only few other European capitals can compete with the amount of sights and attractions offered in London. Besides being one of the most important financial capitals worldwide, London is the heart of the United Kingdom and mother of the British Commonwealth. London’s history goes back to 50 B.C. when the Roman Empire established “Londinium” and set the first stones to build a colossal city with over 7 million people today.
London offers attractions for everyone- whether you are interested in the Royal Family, Britain’s history and empire or simply a fashion lover, London has it all. A stroll along the River Thames is a perfect way to start, giving you stunning views of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, London Eye and Big Ben with the Houses of Parliament. Trafalgar Square is the place to be when the Christmas Tree is lit and for New Year’s Eve celebrations. High fashion shoppers are well served on Regent Street and in the world famous department store Harrods where big brands such as Gucci, Burberry and Versace have established themselves. To grab a bargain shop around Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Street, or visit one of the countless London markets- visitors are usually drawn to Camden for alternative and second-hand clothing.
As London gets very crowded, tourists are advised to do their shopping during the week as opposed to the weekend. The best time to visit is the summer (late June – early September) to avoid rain and stormy weather, however Christmas time in London is exciting and worth seeing for those who don’t mind temperatures below 0°C. London’s main airport is Heathrow featuring 5 terminals and excellent connections to the city centre. There are a handful of other airports such as Stansted, Luton, Gatwick and London City which are mainly used for European flights. London can be reached from all major Australian airports with Qantas. If departing from Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns or Darwin there is a choice of other airlines such as British Airways, Air France, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. Standard flight times vary between 20 and 24 hours.
