Lima Flight Guide
Lima, the capital of Peru, was established in 1535 under the name “City of Kings” by the Spanish conqueror Pizarro. The glorious history of Lima is reflected in the numerous ancient buildings of the city. Lima is the undisputed spiritual, economic and cultural centre of the Andean State Peru. The 7 million people who live here represent 30% of Peru's total population. Lima is ideally located by the Pacific Ocean and is beautifully surrounded by the Andes.
The main attraction is the historical center of Lima in the district of Rimac. This area is packed with churches, monasteries, basilicas and luxurious mansions of the colonial period. In 1988, the historic centre was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. A little further outside of Lima, on the Carretera Panamericana, are the attractive resorts Lurin, Punta Hermosa, San Bartolo and Asia which feature a large number of pubs, bars, clubs and discos. Nature lovers can explore Lima by hopping on a ferry in the harbour of El Callao and see the Islas Palomino, which is home to a large seal colony. Lima is also considered the gastronomic capital of Latin America and visitors are guaranteed to dine in fantastic restaurants and eat spectacular food.
Lima’s weather is nice and warm- the temperature hardly falls below 15°C all year round. Most tourists travel in summer, and it is a good idea to plan the trip outside of high season (avoid November – March). LAN airlines and Qantas offer flights between Australian airports and Lima. However, the journey is very long due to several stops on the way. It is useful to check with US or European airlines as well, to find the fastest and least difficult connections. On average, passengers will fly between 25 and 30 hours.
