Jackson Flight Guide
Jackson is the capital of US state Mississippi and is home to a metropolitan area of approximately half a million people. It is named after General Andrew Jackson and was established in 1822 because Mississippi required a centrally located city.
Jackson was a major battlefield during the American Civil War and was largely destroyed by the troops of the North. Nevertheless, there are still some old buildings to admire such as the Governor's Mansion which was built in 1842. In the struggle for equality, the black population launched many protests in Jackson lead by activist Medgar Evers, who was killed by a white fanatic in 1963. The city devoted a museum to honour Evers- The Medgar Evers Home Museum. Jackson is also known for its growing music industry which features many recording studios and artists, particularly in the gospel genre. One of the most popular tourist attractions remains the Old Capitol and the museum on Mississippi history.
Getting to Jackson can be difficult due to the poor offers of connecting flights. Australian passengers have to stop at least twice on the way with an average journey time of 25 hours. Check online or with a travel agent to find the fastest routes from the departure airport.
