Istanbul Flight Guide
Istanbul is situated on two continents - the city has a European and an Asian side, and that's what makes it so unique. The history of Istanbul reaches back over 2500 years and was formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople. Istanbul is a meeting point of outstanding culture, history and personalities. It is the largest city in Turkey and its steadily growing population has hit the 10 million. All religions and nations are united on this multicultural metropolis which is divided into 27 districts.
There is so much to see in Istanbul that one would need weeks to see everything - nearly 3000 years of history are a long time and traces of it are embedded in every corner of this fascinating city. Two periods in Istanbul’s history stand out the most, which are the Byzantine/ Constantinople Istanbul and the Ottoman Istanbul. The skyline is still dominated by its ancient relics and so is the city wall, the Forum Constantine and the Sultanahmet Square. One of the main tourist attractions of Istanbul are the four minarets and the dome. The Topkapi Palace is also an absolute must! It features a massive area with views of the Bosporus, which was a city itself. The Palace’s harem is also worth a visit as well as the Dolmabahce Palace, which has been used as residence housing important people such as Atatürk. There are numerous accommodations in Istanbul, from affordable to luxurious. Guests who want to enjoy the view of the Bosporus will have to reach deeper into their pockets and stay in the Kempinski Hotel or the Ritz Carlton. It is advised to avoid visiting Istanbul in June to August as the weather gets very hot and the high-season crowd will spoil your stay. Qantas and Singapore Airlines fly to Istanbul from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Flight time between Australia and Istanbul will vary from anywhere between 20 to 26 hours, depending on connecting flights and how much additional time is necessary between connections.
