Hong Kong Flight Guide
Hong Kong used to be a British colony and was given back to China in 1997 when it was named ‘Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China’. Deng Xiaoping developed the so-called ‘doctrine’ which essentially means that one country has two systems of government. This is why Hong Kong is a democracy while the rest of China is communist. Due to this fact, Hong Kong remains one of the most important financial centres of Asia and is able to live according to individual laws with its own currency. However, the politics of Beijing and Hong Kong often collide and disrupt the internal politics of China.
A great way to start a sightseeing tour of Hong Kong is by taking the legendary Star Ferry across the harbour. The Central district is truly a shopping paradise while Lan Kwai Fong is where the nightlife takes place. In Wan Chai tourists can find smaller craft shops where they can purchase ancient Chinese art and walk around the fish market. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant is located in Aberdeen, which is also a popular entertainment district. A trip to Hong Kong is not complete without a ride on the Peak Tram which takes visitors to the top of Victoria Peak. It is a great place to take photographs since one can overview the entire city. Also perfect for beautiful views is the cable car from where tourists can see the largest reef aquarium in the world.
Those who travel from larger Australian airports such as Sydney should look out for flights offered by Virgin. They are often non-stop and direct flights with a journey time of around 10 hours. Alternatively, passengers can book with Qantas or China Airlines which offer flights with only 1 stop- this will take around 17 to 20 hours.
