Hobart Flight Guide
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and has around 200,000 inhabitants. It is located along River Derwent and lies at the bottom of Mount Wellington. Hobart is the second oldest city of Australia and was established in 1804 as a penal colony by Lieutenant-Colonel David Collins who brought 300 prisoners, a number of marines and around 30 free settlers. At the beginning of the 20th Century there were already electric streetcars and stations connecting Hobart with the suburbs of New Town, Queensborough, Wellington, Glenorchy, Risdon and Bellerive.
Hobart is known worldwide for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which takes place every year on the 26th December. Among other attractions is the weekly market at Salamanca Place, which is guaranteed to be a fun excursion. Hobart also has a university, numerous museums and theatres that will make any culturally interested visitor happy. Gamblers can make their way to one of the casinos and nature lovers should take a long walk through the spectacular Botanic Gardens of Hobart.
There are many hotels and hostels in Hobart for all sorts of budgets. The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel has received good reviews by past guests and offers large rooms, good breakfast and a central location at affordable prices. Virgin and Qantas offer direct flights from almost all Australian airports to Hobart. The flights are fairly short, between 2-5 hours.
