Florence Flight Guide
Florence (Firenze in Italian) is a centrally located Italian city on the Arno River with about 370,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of Tuscany and is often referred to as the “Athens of Italy” due to its cultural significance. Florence is the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo which is one of the many reasons it attracts thousands of tourists every year. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the majestic buildings worth seeing as well as the Basilica di San Lorenzo, where the first rulers of Florence (the Medici family) are buried. Florence also features the world famous statue of David and the Laurentian Library, which was built according to Michelangelo’s designs.
Michelangelo’s and Donatello’s works are exhibited in many art galleries which are surrounded by stunning renaissance style architecture. Florence’s city centre is for pedestrians only, which makes walking tours a pleasant experience. The choice of hotels is unlimited and a centrally located accommodation, such as The Hotel Caravaggio is most convenient to avoid long journeys to and from the hotel. Opposite the Basilica of Santa Croce in the historical centre of Florence is the Hotel Dante and the Grand Hotel Cavour that features a roof terrace which overviews the whole city.
Florence can get extremely overcrowded in high season so visitors are strongly advised not to book in the summer months of June, July and August. Florence has a small airport called Amerigo Vespucci which has no direct flights to or from Australia. British Airways or Qantas will take travellers from all over Australia to Rome or London first, hence the flight duration will be no less than 22 hours.
