Dakar Flight Guide
Dakar is the capital of Senegal and is located on the Cape Verde Peninsula on the Atlantic coast. Its convenient position on the western edge of Africa makes Dakar an advantageous starting point for transatlantic and European trade, which contributes to the constant growth of wealth, importance and population.
Dakar has become popular through racing and the Dakar Rally, formerly known as the Paris-Dakar Rally. The final stage of the rally was held at the Lac Rose which is a red salt lake in the north of Dakar. Worth visiting are also the football stadium in Pule and the Millennium Monument, which is located near the Great Mosque. A must-see is the historical centre of Dakar from where tourists can walk to the Place de la Independence or take a boat ride to the former slave island Goree. Very interesting is also the rocky coastline and the astonishing views from the Dakar lighthouse.
Flying to Dakar from Australia can be very difficult. Several airlines service this route, however with many stops and inconvenient connections. Airlines to choose from are Qantas, Thai Air, Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates. The average journey time is between 40 and 50 hours and it is recommended to make a trip to Dakar part of a larger tour through Africa. This way, passengers can fly to larger cities first and avoid travelling 2 or 3 days in one go.
