Colombo Flight Guide
Colombo is the capital of the island nation Sri Lanka and used to be one of the most important harbours in the Indian Ocean for several centuries. Because of its economically and strategically important location, the former fishing village grew rapidly and was conquered by several colonial powers. Colombo was occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch and British and has been influenced by Chinese and Arabic cultures. Today it is a tropical paradise and tourist resort on the island of Sri Lanka.
The main area of interest is the district of "Colombo Fort”. Modern and colonial architecture meet here and form the historic centre. The area 'Pettah' features large markets where tourists can purchase fruit, vegetables, jewellery or even electronic items. In the southern part of Colombo Fort is a small area called Cinnamon Gardens. Tourists come here to visit the numerous museums and it is an absolute must for history and art lovers.
Cinnamon Gardens are also home to the most expensive and luxurious hotels that only wealthy visitors can afford. Other districts also have good hotels with low prices, and all major parts of the city are within walking distance from each other. The city offers visitors a year-round average temperature of 27°C. The humid weather during May and October may lead to monsoon-like showers, a truly beautiful natural experience. Those who prefer it dry should come in January or February. A range of airlines service Colombo airport and flights from Australia will usually stop in Asia before landing in Sri Lanka. The journey time will be anywhere between 19 and 35 hours.
