Canberra Flight Guide
Because Sydney and Melbourne have always competed with each other in terms of size and importance, Canberra was named the capital of Australia in 1913 to settle this dispute. It is therefore the centre of constitutional bodies and important religious institutions, as well as the major government location. Canberra is the eighth largest city in Australia and is located in the independent state "Australian Capital Territory" which is exclusive to the government. It is the only metropolis in Australia which is not situated by the sea and is surrounded by natural parks instead.
Canberra is divided into seven districts and the various official bodies are mainly located in southern districts. However, visitors have plenty of other sights to explore and the natural surroundings are the perfect place for a stroll. The city centre is the main shopping area, and further north is the exciting International Dinosaur Museum. Students appreciate the diverse nightlife that Canberra has on offer and the best districts for a great evening out are around the city centre. A special annual highlight is Stonefest, one of the most famous and popular rock music festivals in Australia.
The Hyatt Hotel is the most exclusive address in Canberra and is only minutes away from Parliament House. A cheaper place to stay is the Victor Lodge, a family-run and centrally located B&B. There is a choice of airlines that offer domestic flights to Canberra such as Qantas, Virgin, Tiger Airways and Brindabella Airlines. There are direct flights from all major airports and flight times vary between 5h (from Townsville) and 30 minutes (from Sydney).
