Cairo Flight Guide
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and with its more than 7.5 million inhabitants also the largest city among the Arabic countries. Although Cairo has wrongly been labelled as ‘dusty desert’, countless attractions surprise visitors over and over again. Egypt is one of the major birthplaces of human civilisation and it is useful to read up on ancient history and Egyptian kingdoms to appreciate the sights and significance of Cairo.
Probably the most famous attractions are The Pyramids of Giza which are also called "The Sanctuary" by locals. The Pyramids are one of the Seven Wonders of the World and are an absolute must-see. Just as impressive is the Great Sphinx of Giza, a gigantic statue of a lion with a human head. A trip to Cairo should also include a visit to one of the numerous bazaars such as the Khan El-Khalili near the Hussein Mosque. Travellers will be surrounded by the enchanting scents of Arabic spices and perfumes, and can also purchase jewellery or clothes. Do not be shy and negotiate the price to grab a bargain! It is useful to know that Egypt is a Muslim country and even at night alcohol is often not on offer. To avoid pick pocketing, leave all valuables in the hotel and to keep an eye on bags, wallets and cameras.
The Hotel Pharaoh is a good place to stay due to its fair prices and comfortable rooms. Those who prefer a little more luxury can look into the Mena House Oberoi, which is expensive but offers excellent rooms and services. Qantas offers flights from Melbourne and Sydney via Abu Dhabi. The journey can take between 21 and 31 hours.
