Berlin Flight Guide
Berlin is the largest German city with 3.5 million inhabitants. It was the capital from 1871 to 1945 when Germany lost the war and Berlin was divided into East and West Berlin, separated by the Berlin Wall. In November 1989 the Wall came down and Berlin was made capital of a reunified Germany.
Apart from being the political centre and setting for important historical events, Berlin has many sights to offer to its visitors. Among the most popular are the Brandenburg Gate, the 69-metre-high Victory Column, the Reichstag and the Nikolai Church, which is the oldest church of Berlin. It also features Germany’s most renowned universities and has a large selection of cultural institutions such as museums, art galleries and theatres. A good time to visit is spring (March – June) to avoid large tourist crowds.
Visitors should book hotels in the city centre to avoid long journeys between sightseeing tours. Winter's Hotel Gendarmenmarkt for instance is centrally located and has received good reviews from past guests. ETAP hotels are a good alternative with fair prices and central position. Berlin’s main airport is Berlin Tegel, one of the largest in Germany. Qantas, British Airways and Lufthansa are the main airlines to look for, offering (indirect) flights from all major Australian cities with average flight durations of 22 – 30 hours, depending on connections and stops.
