Amsterdam Flight Guide

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands with a population of just under 800,000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by water like the rest of the country and is famous for its canals which are used to get around the city. Amsterdam owes its name to a dam on the Amstel River.

Well-known personalities come from Amsterdam such as the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Amsterdam even dedicated a museum to him where his most famous works are on display. Another world famous artist is Van Gogh and his works can be admired in the Van Gogh Museum. One of the darkest chapters in European history is confronted in the Anne Frank house where travellers can enter and see where Anne’s Jewish family was hiding during World War 2. The wax museum Madame Tussauds is also worth a visit.
The Nieuwe Kerk is one of the beautiful churches in Amsterdam and is the location for coronations and weddings of the Royal Family. Amsterdam has legalised the consummation of Marijuana, and is well known for its legendary Coffee Shops where it is available. The Red-Light District is a popular nightlife destination where ladies are on display in red-lit windows. Prostitution is legal and most girls are actually self-employed. This district also has a range of brothels and sex shops to choose from.

Hotels are countless in Amsterdam but an exciting alternative to traditional accommodation are houseboats which can be rented online. Camping is also possible but campers are advised to go between June and September to avoid rain. Qantas, British Airways and Air France offer flights between Amsterdam and all major Sydney airports. Be prepared to travel at least 24 hours if not more.
