Addis Ababa Flight Guide
Established in 1886, Addis Ababa currently boasts a growing population of 4.5 Million. The third highest capital in the world, Addis Ababa sits at an altitude of 2,300 meters, and lies rests majestically at the feet of Mount Entoto. As a chartered city, Addis Ababa has the distinction of holding both state and city status, and is often referred to as the capital of Africa due in large part to the city’s significant historical and political importance on the African continent.
Ethiopia boasts 80 different nationalities and as many different languages, and the convergence of these many cultures into Addis Ababa make it an exciting and culturally diverse city. For locals and tourists alike, the weather is ideal – temperatures are consistent year round, with a month to month consistency of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.
Popular tourist destinations within the city include the oldest theatre in Ethiopia, Hager Fikir Theatre, located in the popular Piazza district; Lucy, the fossilized skeleton of an early hominid, which can be found in the Ethiopian National Museum, and the famous Meskel Square which welcomes thousands of tourists for the Meskel Festival each September. Visitors are also encouraged to spend a day or two in the Merkato district, which is home to the largest open air market in the world.
Tourists should choose reputable hotels within the city centre. The Sheraton Addis Hotel, Intercontinental Addis Hotel, The Plaza and the Hilton hotel chains all offer lovely accommodation choices in the heart of the city.
Bole International Airport is the major flight hub in Addis Ababa, and is reportedly the 5th busiest airport in Ethiopia. The airport underwent extensive renovations in 2003, which included the addition of a modern and comfortable new terminal. Flights are offered from Sydney and Perth, and travel time can range between 18 and 40 hours, depending on stopovers and transfers. Emirates, South African Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Thai Airlines all fly to Addis Ababa from either Sydney or Perth, Australia.
