Ukraine is a break away state of the former USSR. It is located in Eastern Europe bordering Russia to the east; Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to the west, Romania to the south and south west and Belarus to the North. It has a coastline on the black sea. Its capital and largest city is Kiev. Other major cities include; Odessa, Kharkov, Chisinau and Donetsk. The official language is Ukrainian. Places to visit include the Ukrainian capital which is home to the world famous Orthodox and Baroque architecture, The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Motherland statue in Kyiv, Khotyn Fortress, The Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle, Potemkin Stairs in Odessa, Freedom Square, in Kharkiv, The Swallow's Nest and the Livadia Palace near Yalta. Winters along the black sea are cool but colder inland. The west and northern regions receive the highest rainfall.
