The Republic of Turkey is a large country in western Asia but it is a member of the European Union. It borders Syria, Iraq and Iran to the west and Georgia and Armenia to the North West. It has coastline on the Mediterranean as well as black sea. Its capital and largest city is Ankara. Other major cities are Istanbul (the largest), Izmir and Adana. The official language is Turkish. Great places to visit in Turkey include; the beach resorts in Antalya, the historic city of Istanbul with its remnants of Ottoman and Byzantine empires, site of the tomb of Rumi in Konya, ancient fortress and port city of Sinop and the Sumela Monastery in Trabzon. The areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea experience hot and dry summers and the winters are mild and wet. The interior regions of the Central Anatolian plateau experience severe winters. The Atatürk International Airport (IATA: IST) is the main international airport in Turkey. Other major airports include Antalya International Airport (IATA: AYT), Esenboga International Airport (IATA: ESB) and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (IATA: SAW). Direct flights to Turkey from Australia are rarely available. Cheap indirect flights are operated by Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Lufthansa. The main departure airports in Australia are Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney Kingsford Smith, Brisbane and Perth. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Istanbul in Turkey in a commercial airliner is 18 hours.
