The Swiss Confederation is a landlocked country in central Europe. It is bordered by France, Italy, Austria and Germany. The southern half of Switzerland is mainly composed of a mountainous area, the location of the Swiss Alps where wet conditions persist throughout the year. Direct flights to Switzerland from Australia are few. However,, Singapore Airlines, Austrian airlines and Swiss Air operate cheap indirect flights from the main departure cities of Brisbane, Perth, Sydney Kingsford Smith and Melbourne Tullamarine. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Zurich in Switzerland in a commercial airliner is 20 hours.
