The Republic of Peru is located in South America. It borders Brazil to the east and north east, Chile to the south, Bolivia to the southeast, Colombia to the north and Ecuador to the North West. Its capital and largest city is Lima. Other major cities are Chiclayo, Trujillo and Callao. The official language is Spanish. The territory where modern day Peru is located used to be the home of the Norte Chico civilization and to the Inca Empire. The ruins of these civilizations attract numerous visitors annually. The Andes Mountains which run parallel to the Pacific Ocean cause diversity in weather patterns throughout the country. Jorge Chávez International Airport (IATA: LIM) in Lima is the main international airport in Peru. Other major airports are Rodríguez Ballón International Airport (IATA: AQP) and Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (IATA: CUZ). Direct flights are not common but indirect flights are operated by Qantas and Delta Airlines. Brisbane, Melbourne Tullamarine and Sydney Kingsford Smith are the main departure airports. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Lima in Peru in a commercial airliner is 17 hours.
