The republic of Pakistan is located in south Asia. It borders India to its east, Iran to the west and Afghanistan to the north. Its capital city is Islamabad. Other major cities include; Karachi which is the largest, Lahore, Faisalabad and Hyderabad. The official language in Pakistan is Urdu and English. Despite years of bad press, Pakistan continues to attract visitors due to its diverse cultures, beautiful landscapes and a variety of attractions which include the ruins of ancient civilizations. There are also several mountain peaks with heights exceeding 7000 metres for the adventurous. The weather in Pakistan conforms to four distinct seasons; winter from December to February, spring from March to May, summer from June to September and a retreating monsoonal period from October to November. Pakistan has a number of airports but by far the largest is the Jinnah International Airport (IATA: KHI) in Karachi. Other major international airports are Benazir Bhutto International Airport (IATA: ISB), Gwadar International Airport (IATA: GWD), Faisalabad International Airport (IATA: LYP), Dera Ghazi Khan International Airport (IATA: DEA), Allama Iqbal International Airport (IATA: LHE), Multan International Airport (IATA: MUX), Peshawar International Airport (IATA: PEW), Shaikh Zayed International Airport (IATA: RYK), Sialkot International Airport (IATA: SKT) and Turbat International Airport (IATA: TUK). Direct flights from Australia to Pakistan are rare though Singapore Airlines operates cheap indirect flights from Sydney Kingsford Smith and Perth. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Karachi in Pakistan in a commercial airliner is 14 hours.
