Mexico is a Central American country located south of the USA. It shares a border with the US states of California and Texas. Its capital and largest city is Mexico City. Other major cities include; Guadalajara, Tijuana, Hermosillo, Monterrey and Acapulco. Mexico is bordered to the south east by Guatemala. Its eastern border forms the Gulf of Mexico and it has a long western border on the Pacific Ocean. The official language of Mexico is Spanish. Mexico has great biodiversity with over 200, 000 different species of life. Visitors can see wildlife in the parks and natural protected areas. There are also a large number of archaeological sites such as the Chichén-Itzá which is considered one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to pre Colombian ruins, Aztec ruins, Maya ruins and so forth, Mexico has a lot to offer a visitor. The northern part of the country is temperate while the southern part is in the tropics. Hence, most of the southern regions are fairly warm all year round whereas the north is colder. The main international airport in Mexico is the Mexico International (IATA: MEX) in Mexico City. Direct flights from Australia to Mexico are not available; however, Qantas, Mexican and Delta Airlines operate cheap direct flights from the main departure airports of Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney Kingsford Smith and Brisbane. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Mexico City in a commercial airliner is 17 hours.
