The republic of Lebanon is located in Western Asia. It borders Israel to its south and Syria to the north and east. Its capital and largest city is Beirut. Other major cities include; Byblos, Sidon, Tripoli, Tyre and Zahle. Arabic and French are the official languages in Lebanon. The natural scenery of Lebanon is rich with beautiful beaches and breathtaking mountains and valleys. Downtown Beirut is filled with nightclubs, restaurants and other places of entertainment. Al Bass, an archaeological site in Tyre is a UNESCO world heritage site. Other sites to see include Jeita Grotto, Beiteddin and Qudisha valley. The main rainy season in Lebanon is from November to December while the dry season runs from June to August. The largest international airport in Lebanon is the Beirut international (IATA: BEY) also known as the Rafic Hariri International Airport. Direct flights from Australia are not common but indirect flights are operated mainly y Qantas. The main departure airports in Australia are Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney Kingsford Smith, Adelaide and Brisbane. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Beirut in Lebanon in a commercial airliner is 17 and a half hours.
