Located in the Pacific Ocean, Japan is an island nation east of the Sea of Japan. Its capital and largest city is Tokyo. Other major cities include; Hiroshima, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Osaka, Sapporo and Sendai. There is no officially recognized language. The main languages in use are Aynu Itak, Eastern Japanese, Western Japanese and Rhukyuan in addition to several other Japanese dialects. Japan is a nation of contrasts, the old and the new juxtaposed in interesting ways. There are 14 UNESCO world heritage sites in Japan. Popular destinations and attractions include Japans famous hot springs, Mount Fuji, the 88 temple pilgrimage, Buddhist shrines and historical buildings. The main rainy season in Japan is in early May and the climate is predominantly temperate. There are quite a number of international airports in Japan. The largest is the Tokyo International (IATA: HND) followed by the Narita International (IATA: NRT). Quite a number of airlines operate direct flights to Tokyo from Australia. The main airline operating direct flights is Qantas. Major departure airports include; Sydney Kingsford Smith, Perth, Brisbane, Perth, Cairns and Gold coast. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Tokyo, Hiroshima or Osaka in Japan in a commercial airliner is 9 and a half hours.
