The state of Israel is located in Western Asia along the eastern Mediterranean shores. Its capital and largest city is Jerusalem. Other major cities are Tel Aviv and Haifa. The official languages in Israel are Hebrew and Arabic though English is also in very wide use. Israel is a popular tourist destination especially due to its religious significance for Christians and Jews. Attractions include; the biblical town of Nazareth, Akko which is a UNESCO world heritage site, shrine of the Bub, Belvoir castle, Caesarea, Masada, Megiddo, Sea of Galilee, the ancient city of Hazur and Nimrod castle. The weather can fluctuate widely in Israel especially during winter. The mountain regions are windy, cold and occasionally snow. Coastal cities experience cold wet winters and long hot summers. The main international airports in Israel are the Tel Aviv International airport (IATA: TLV) and Ovda International Airport (IATA: VDA). Direct flights from Australia are rare but indirect flights are offered mainly by Qantas, Delta and Singapore Airlines. The main departure airports are Melbourne Tullamarine and Sydney Kingsford Smith. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv in Israel in a commercial airliner is 17 and a half hours.
