The republic of Iceland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is an island country with a population of slightly over 300, 000. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavik. The other city worthy of note is Vestmannaeyjar located in the volcanically active islands in southern Iceland. The official language in Iceland is Icelandic. Tour companies offer excursions from the capital to see the glaciers and volcanoes. The Pingvellir National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site. Other attractions Blue Lagoon, Myvata, Gullfoss and Geysir. The average daily temperature in Reykjavik is 7 degrees Celsius and the warmest months are from June to September while the coldest are from November to March. Keflavík International Airport (IATA: KEF) is the main airport in Iceland. Direct flights from Australia are not possible but Qantas and Singapore Airlines offer indirect flights. The main departure airport is Sydney Kingsford Smith. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Reykjavik in Iceland in a commercial airliner is 20 and a half hours.
