Greece is officially referred to as the Hellenic Republic and is located in south eastern Europe, specifically at the southern most end of the Balkan peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Athens. Other major cities are Thessaloniki and Piraeus. Greece is the official language. Greece has a rich history and Greek folklore is rich with mythical legends. There are ecological and cultural attractions as well as archaeological sites, monuments and museums. Examples include; mount Athos, Acropolis, Vassae, Vergina, Delphi, Delos, early Christian and byzantine ruins, Thessalonica amongst others. Winters in Greece are mild and wet with some snow while summers are hot and dry. The main international airport in Greece is the Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (IATA:ATH). Other major airports are International Airport of Central Greece "Nea Anchialos" (IATA:VOL) and Alexandroupolis International Airport "Dimokritos/Democritus" (IATA:AXD). There are no direct flights to Greece from Australia. However Qantas and Singapore Airlines offer indirect flights. The main departure airports are Sydney Kingsford Smith, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne Tullamarine, Adelaide and Roma. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Athens in Greece in a commercial airliner is 19 hours.
