The republic of Finland is a Nordic country located in northern Europe. Its neighbours are Sweden to the west, Russia on the east and Norway to the north. The capital and largest city is Helsinki. Other major cities include Espoo and Tampere. Finnish and Swedish are the official languages of Finland. Finland is a popular tourist destination attracting about 4 million visitors a year. Commercial cruises between coastal cities in the Baltic regions are popular. Finland is also regarded as the home of “Santa Klaus” (Saint Nicholas). Other activities available in Finland include; skiing, golf, hiking and kayaking. The northern part of the country is severely cold and winters run for almost seven months. Southern Finland averages minus 20 degrees Celsius in winter. Summer is from July to august when the average temperatures are 25 degrees Celsius. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (IATA: HEL) is the main international gateway to Finland. The other major airport is the Tampere-Pirkkala Airport (IATA: TMP). Direct flights from Australia to Finland are not available though Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa offer indirect flights to Helsinki. The main departure airports in Australia are Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne Tullamarine, Roma, Brisbane, Hobart, Sydney and Darwin. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Helsinki in Finland in a commercial airliner is 19 hours.
