The Arab Republic of Egypt is located in North Africa. It is considered a Middle Eastern country due its Muslim heritage and close historical ties with the Arab Middle East including being a long time member of the Arab league. It is bordered by Libya to the west and Sudan to the south and has a Mediterranean and red sea coastline to the north and north east respectively. The capital and largest city is Cairo. Other major cities are Alexandria and Giza. The official language in Egypt is Arabic though is English is spoken widely and used in many business transactions. Egypt is a tourist magnet attracting millions of visitors per year who mainly go to see the Pyramids at Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Other popular places include; the Nile valley, the southern desert, the Sinai Peninsula and the fine coastal beaches.

Egypt does not experience much rainfall. Much of southern Egypt is actually desert and semi desert. Temperatures are quite high on the red sea coast averaging 30 degrees Celsius all year round. Desert temperatures in the south frequently exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

The main point of entry into Egypt for international visitors is the Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI). Other international airports include; El Arish International Airport(IATA:AAC), Luxor International Airport(IATA:LXR), Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport(IATA:SSH), St. Catherine International Airport(IATA:SKV) and TCP Taba International Airport(IATA:TCP). Direct flights from Australia are not available but given that Egypt is a popular tourist destination in the world, there are cheap indirect flight options for travellers which connect to Egypt via hubs in Asia or South Africa. Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Delta Airlines offer indirect flights from a number of cities, the main departure airports being; Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Roma. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Cairo in Egypt in a commercial airliner is 18 hours. Indirect flights will vary depending on the connecting hub.
