Cyprus is an Island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Greek and Turkish are the official languages of Cyprus. The capital and largest city is Nicosia while other notable cities include; Paphos, Larnaca, Limassol, Kyrenic and Famagusta. Cyprus is a popular tourist destination attracting over two million tourists annually. The beaches are excellent and the people are traditionally warm and inviting. Some of the sites to see include; the Tomb of the Kings which is a UNESCO world heritage site, Maa Palaeo Kastro settlement, Medieval walls of Lefkosia and Archbishops palace. Cyprus also has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. There are four distinct seasons in Cyprus. Summertime is long and hot, autumn is warm and sea temperatures are usually still high. Winter is short and mild with average temperatures of around 16 degrees Celsius. There is a short snow season from January to March. In spring, the island is alight with brilliant wild flowers and eye popping colours. The main international airport in Cyprus is LCA Larnaca International Airport (IATA: LCA). Other major airports are; ECN Ercan International Airport (IATA: ECN), NIC Nicosia International Airport (IATA: NIC) and Paphos International Airport (IATA: PFO). There are no direct flights from Australia to Cyprus though Qantas and Lufthansa offer indirect flights to Larnaca. The main departure airports are Roma, Melbourne Tullamarine, Sydney Kingsford Smith and Perth. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Nicosia in Cyprus in a commercial airliner is 18 hours.
