The republic of Colombia is located in the north western region of South America. Venezuela and Brazil are its eastern neighbours whereas Ecuador and Peru are to its south. It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and Panama borders it to the North West. The capital and largest city is Bogota and the official language is Spanish. Other major cities in Columbia include; Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Cucuta, Popayan, Tunja, Turbo, Buenaventura and Tumaco. Years of armed conflict have deterred tourists fro along time. However, the current administration has made great strides to remedy this situation and tourist numbers are up. There is a great variety of flora and fauna in Colombia. There are a number of national parks as well UNESCO world heritage sites. Colombia is affected by the El Nino and La Nina phenomenon. Rainfall normally occurs during the two rainy seasons that correspond to the spring and autumn of temperate latitudes. Rainfall in the pacific region of Colombia is amongst the highest in the world. The main international airport in Colombia is El Dorado International Airport (IATA: BOG). Other major airports are; El Edén International Airport(IATA:AXM), BAQ Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport(IATA:BAQ), Palonegro International Airport(IATA:BGA), CLO Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport(IATA:CLO), CTG Rafael Núñez International Airport (IATA:CTG), CUC Camilo Daza International Airport(IATA:CUC), LET Vásquez Cobo International Airport (IATA:LET), RNG José María Córdova International Airport (IATA:RNG), Matecaña International Airport(IATA:PEI) and ADZ Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport (IATA:ADZ). There are no direct flights to Colombia from Australia. Mexicana and Qantas airlines operate indirect flights from Brisbane, Perth and Sydney Kingsford Smith which are the main departure airports. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to Bogota in Colombia in a commercial airliner is 18 hours.
