With a population of 1.3 billion, The Peoples Republic of China as it is officially known is the most populous nation on earth. It is also the largest country in East Asia and third largest in the world. It borders 14 nations. Chinese Mandarin is the official spoken language while simplified Chinese is the official written language. The largest city in China is Shanghai while the capital city is Beijing. Other major cities in China include; Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Wuhan, Shenyang, Nanjing, Chongqing and Tianjing. Hong Kong and Macau are autonomous special administrative regions. There are no direct flights to China from Australia. However, Qantas and Singapore Airlines operate indirect flights to Beijing Capital from the main departure airports of Sydney Kingsford Smith, Perth, Melbourne Tullamarine, Brisbane, Roma, Adelaide and Canberra. The average direct flight time from Sydney or Melbourne to China in a commercial airliner is 11 hours to Beijing and 10 hours to Shanghai.
