Is the giant of the sky going to be better for our wallets?

Yesterday highly anticipated Airbus A380 arrived in Australia, and comes with a Qantas promise that this ‘giant-of-the-sky' could lead to cheaper flights for passengers. Geoff Dixon, the chief executive is hopeful that cheaper fares will come, depending on where the passenger sits in the plane. He also stated that this new aircraft is giving Qantas an opportunity to reinvent their product, with it's new technology and seating for 450 passengers.

The test flights have commenced, and once they are finished the plane will be one of only seven in the world that are in commercial use. The plane has many great new features including ergonomic chairs, mood lighting, up to date in-flight entertainment, including up to 100 great movies on demand, 350 TV choices, 500 audio cd's and 30 computer games to keep passengers of all ages entertained and amused. Every seat will have in-seat laptop power and all seats, regardless of class will allow for email access. There will also be a library of books that the passengers will have access to onboard.

The designs for the seats, beds and fabrics, the crockery and the all fittings are being designed by famous France-based Australian designer Marc Newton. Qantas is expected to charge a premium for some seats offering four classes; economy, premium economy, business and first-class options.

The first services were due to start next month between Melbourne and LA, followed by a route to London in February, but as with any other new plane safety clearance and release, I wouldn't hold your breath. But when they are up in the air and have scheduled regular flights, they will certainly be a comfortable way to fly!
