The International Comedy Festival.
In 1987 the Melbourne International Comedy festival was launched by Barry Humphries and Peter Cook. Now, over 20 years and 20 festivals later, with attendances of over 400,000 it is Australia's largest and most celebrated cultural event.
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world, standing beside the Edinburgh Festival and Montreal's Just for Laughs. Being an annual event, it takes place in April every year and takes over all of Melbourne and some of the outer suburbs with a huge fun filled program of visual arts, film, radio, street art, cabaret, stand up and theatre. No matter your age or your taste, there will be something that will make you laugh.
It is the most accessible theatre event, with tickets cheap and sometimes even free, the Melbourne International comedy festival aims to showcase and celebrate the best of Australia's comedians, nurture and develop new comedians and to present the finest international artists to Australian audiences.
The festival runs for three and a half weeks in Autumn and is a must see even for any traveller domestic or international and during this time Melbourne becomes the hub of the worlds comedy.
